🚢 Unless you hold a passport as a European Union (EU) citizen, if you’re planning to go on a cruise that calls at any ports in the EU, please take note!

The much publicised European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) has been postponed yet again, this time until late 2026.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an automated online system that will assess the eligibility of non-EU nationals to travel to the EU. It’s not a visa, but rather a scheme to enhance security and improve border control efficiency.

The ETIAS scheme is similar to electronic travel authorization systems used in other countries such as:

👉 The United States’ Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)
👉 Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
👉 Australia’s Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)

Note: If you are on a cruise calling at EU ports, even if you do not plan to leave the ship, you will still need an ETIAS to travel.

Who’s Affected by ETIAS?

The ETIAS Scheme will affect citizens of over 60 countries, including the UK. They will need to apply for ETIAS authorisation before travelling to EU countries for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

What Does ETIAS Mean For You?

Once ETIAS is launched, you’ll need to submit an online application, providing personal and travel details. In most cases, you should receive approval within minutes.

ETIAS Fees

There will be a fee for ETIAS. The application fee is 7 Euros, which is payable by debit or credit card. This fee applies to travellers between the ages of 18 and 70. If you’re under 18 or over 70, you won’t have to pay the fee.

It’s worth noting that the fee is non-refundable, even if your application is denied. The revenue generated from ETIAS fees will be used to cover the costs of running the system, and any excess funds will be added to the EU budget.
